Once the headquarters of Royal Mail, the building has long been connected with communication, correspondence and the movement of messages across London and beyond. It was from nearby Artillery Ground in 1784 that Vincenzo Lunardi rose into England\u2019s skies in a hot air balloon, setting a precedent for elevation of a different kind. James Lackington\u2019s great book emporium stood close by in 1793, a Temple of the Muses where curious minds gathered. Later came seminaries and churches, noted physicians and reformers, and the Guildhall associations that anchor the area\u2019s civic life. Even the drinking fountain nods to Tom Smith, the inventor of the Christmas cracker.
