The hotel’s interiors—crafted by Studio Est—celebrate a quiet luxury rooted in heritage and nature. We sat down with Louise East, Founder of Studio Est, to explore the inspirations behind the design, from garden motifs and Georgian architecture to the sculptural beauty of bespoke lighting.
Montcalm Mayfair is more than a hotel—it’s a considered experience where heritage, craftsmanship and nature converge. At the heart of that vision is the design of its public spaces, created by London-based interior architecture studio Studio Est. We spoke to Studio Est’s Founder, Louise East, about the ideas, inspirations and craft behind the hotel’s interiors.
We set out to create interiors that respected the history of the building while introducing a new sense of calm sophistication. The aim was to balance the grandeur of the Georgian structure with a quieter, contemporary elegance that guests would feel as soon as they entered the space.
We used a palette of natural materials—oak, marble, brass—and layered in handcrafted details that bring a warm, residential quality. It was important to us that the spaces didn’t feel overly formal, but rather inviting, refined and inherently comfortable.
A floral and garden-inspired narrative helped shape the direction of the design, weaving a thread of nature through every material, texture and form.
We were particularly inspired by the legacy of Constance Spry—the British educator and floral designer who reimagined what flower arranging could be in the early 20th century. Her ethos of natural, organic beauty guided our approach.
That influence can be seen in the floral motifs, bespoke textiles and sculptural lighting that appear throughout the hotel. For example, the large chandelier in the Lilli restaurant and the chandeliers in the bar all echo the shape of budding flowers, adding a sculptural softness to the spaces.
It’s not a literal garden, but rather a quiet homage—something that brings a sense of serenity and harmony, and that connects subtly to Montcalm Mayfair’s broader theme of nature meeting luxury.
One of the most striking features is the curved glass gantry in the lounge, which allows light to spill across the room while creating a sense of theatre. We paired this with marble arches and bespoke chandeliers to establish a strong architectural rhythm in the space.
The lighting plays a key role throughout. From the grand chandelier in Lilli to the flower bud-inspired forms in the bar, these pieces are as much art as they are function.
We also worked closely with artisans and ethical makers to source artwork and decorative elements with integrity—from social-impact businesses to local craftspeople. These finishing touches help define the mood and personality of each space.
We designed Montcalm Mayfair’s interiors to feel like a retreat from the city—a place where guests can exhale. Every surface, light source and furnishing was chosen to encourage a sense of calm and quiet luxury.
Natural textures, layered lighting and considered sightlines all help create an environment that feels intimate, elevated and thoughtfully made. Whether you’re pausing in the lounge, exploring the bar, or dining at Lilli, there’s a consistency of atmosphere—welcoming, elegant and deeply rooted in its surroundings.
Collect is a celebration of contemporary craftsmanship, and Montcalm Mayfair’s participation speaks directly to our shared values. The hotel’s curated art collection—developed in collaboration with Culture A—reflects the same balance of past and present that guided our design.
At Collect, that dialogue continues. The pieces on display offer texture, history, materiality—much like the interiors themselves. It’s about storytelling, quality, and the beauty of thoughtful creation.
Lilli was designed as a bold yet harmonious contrast to the rest of the hotel. The dining space features a rich dark green palette, low-level lighting and a striking gold coffered ceiling that brings both grandeur and warmth. It’s a space that feels intimate, but with a sense of drama.
In the bar, we introduced cream and terracotta tones to create a more relaxed but equally refined environment. The bespoke lighting—particularly the chandeliers shaped like flower buds—continues the floral narrative in a more sculptural way.
Altogether, the design creates a distinct setting for Akira Back’s fusion cuisine—contemporary, layered, and full of personality.
