A Journey Through Passion and Creativity

Kristina Balevska, a recent Ravensbourne graduate of 2023, is ready to embark on an exciting new chapter as the Montcalm East Photographer in Residence. Starting her residency from July to September, Kristina’s journey is a testament to her passion and dedication to the art of photography, a love she discovered in her teenage years.

Kristina is renowned for her ethereal, Renaissance-inspired pieces that play on an underwater theme. Her unique style captures the delicate beauty and dreamlike quality of submerged worlds, drawing inspiration from both classical art and modern photography trends.

Exploring Creativity at Montcalm East

During her residency, Kristina plans to leverage Montcalm East’s extensive spa facilities and swimming pool to continue her underwater photography projects. These facilities will provide the perfect backdrop for her to experiment and create stunning new works that push the boundaries of conventional photography.

In addition to her personal projects, Kristina has developed three innovative workshops designed to inspire and educate photographers of all levels. Each workshop is crafted to offer a deep dive into different aspects of photography, from experimental techniques to model direction and budget-friendly post-production.

Q&A with our photographer in residence Kristina Balevska

Q: What are you most excited about working with the hotel?

A: Being given the opportunity to create and have full freedom to do so is so exciting, especially when it’s based in one of the most creative parts of London.

Q: What advice would you give to any budding photographers?

A: Don’t be afraid of ‘mistakes’ and don’t compare yourself. Get inspired by other creatives and experiment with your photography until you find a style that suits you. Oh, and be kind when working with anyone ever and don’t forget to credit everyone who helped out!

Q: How would you describe your photography style in three words?

A: Experimental, ethereal, fashion.

Q: What inspired you to become a photographer?

A: This is a tough question since it was a combination of quite a lot of things, but I think the biggest influence was Tumblr and the photography I saw on there. It really helped me ‘find myself’ when I was going through puberty.

Q: How are you going to use your time at the hotel?

A: In the pool, figuring out the best ways to shoot underwater without my camera getting water damage! And then probably trying to edit the pictures, asking everyone’s opinion on whether or not I should make the water look more blue, green, or purple.

Q: What brands have you worked with and how? Have you been featured in any publications yet?

A: I’ve had a few fashion brands reach out, such as Disturbia and Idee Fixe Switch, either through Instagram or Contact.xyz. I also got to work with Peugeot, which was an incredible opportunity, but unfortunately, I didn’t make the publication.

Q: Where in East London do you go when you’re in need of inspiration?

A: Brick Lane, hands down, for its vibrant people and unique fashion, or Hackney Marshes, which is a beautiful place to shoot at sunset.

Q: How was your experience at Ravensbourne? Are there any key learnings that helped forge your style of photography?

A: Going to Ravensbourne was an amazing experience thanks to my lovely tutors. I learned quite a lot from them in terms of the technical side of photography, which helped push my experimental approach further. Being a student ambassador allowed me to spend even more time in the studio, collaborating with fashion students and playing around with equipment.
