The book’s exploration of the Rose’s timeless influence across art, design, and nature mirrors Montcalm Mayfair’s commitment to celebrating creativity, sensitive luxury, botanical beauty, and its Georgian heritage. Much like the hotel’s Mark of the Garden initiative, which draws inspiration from the artistry of Constance Spry, this event offers a beautiful opportunity to immerse guests in the elegance and charm of the Georgian era, reflecting the spirit of creativity and floral inspiration.

Join us for this special salon event at Montcalm Mayfair, held in honour of Chelsea Flower Show week — a beautiful evening celebrating the upcoming release of The Rose Book by Phaidon Books. The event will feature an insightful conversation with Victoria Clarke, Gardening Editor at Phaidon, and Michael Marriott, a renowned rosarian and contributor to the book.

Guests will be welcomed by Victoria Clarke, Country Life‘s esteemed Gardening Editor, whose passion for the natural world and ability to capture its beauty through storytelling has inspired many readers.

Alongside her, Michael Marriott, one of the world’s most respected rosarians and former Head Rosarian at David Austin Roses, will share his extraordinary knowledge. Michael is also the author of RHS Roses (2022) and currently serves as Chairman of the Historic Roses Group, offering a lifetime’s worth of insights into the cultural, artistic, and botanical significance of roses.

To complement the evening’s floral theme, guests will also be invited to enjoy two signature botanical-inspired cocktails, thoughtfully crafted to enhance the atmosphere — a perfect flourish to an enchanting gathering during one of the most anticipated weeks in the gardening calendar.

The Enduring Influence of Constance Spry

Constance Spry was a free-spirited soul who shared a love of flowers, a belief that a garden should be lived in, and a desire to pass that knowledge on. She knew that gardens, like stories, are not just about beauty; they are about memory, feeling, and the simple joy of making something your own.

She believed in the power of storytelling and was beautifully drawn to the belief that she delivered in her book Rosa – Some Things Stay. Constance Spry embraced the unexpected, finding beauty in a forgotten hedgerow rose just as much as in a prized hybrid. She blurred the lines between garden and home, bringing the outdoors inside and making flowers part of everyday life.

Just as Spry transformed floral design into a form of artistic storytelling, The Mark of The Garden curates an experience where nature, creativity, and heritage intertwine, offering guests a refined yet organic retreat in the heart of London.

“Do whatever you please. Follow your own star: be original if you want to be and don’t if you don’t want to be. Just be natural and gay and light-hearted and pretty and simple and overflowing and general and baroque and bare and austere and stylised and wild and daring and conservative. And learn and learn and learn. Open your mind to every form of beauty.” – Constance Spry

The Mark of the Garden

Montcalm Mayfair draws its inspiration from the timeless elegance of the garden, epitomised by Constance Spry, whose ground breaking approach to floral design continues to influence this luxury boutique hotel in Mayfair. Just as Spry celebrated the natural, unexpected beauty of flowers and their ability to tell a story, Montcalm Mayfair weaves a narrative through its Mark of the Garden initiative. This initiative embraces the idea that gardens and flowers are not only about visual beauty but also about the emotions, memories, and stories they evoke.

Guests are welcomed by a lush, botanical entrance, surrounded by vibrant plants and floral-themed murals and artwork specially commissioned for the hotel. The hotel’s interiors echo a tranquil garden, featuring garden-inspired murals, floral textures, and botanical decor. The air is infused with a bespoke garden-inspired fragrance, creating an immediate sensory connection to nature.

Through this salon event, Montcalm Mayfair continues to honour the heritage of flowers, art, and design, providing a refined yet organic retreat that invites guests to connect with the enduring allure of nature.
