Valérie Novello is an artist who has developed a highly sensitive body of work at the frontier of sculpture, painting, and drawing. A graduate of the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts de Paris, Novello’s work is a precious and delicate discovery that strives to reveal with poetry the presence of memories and things under layers of paper and pigments. Mainly graphic, her work unfolds at the limits of drawing and sculpture, associating in the treatment of Japanese paper techniques of drawing and bas-reliefs, and pushing the territory of drawing towards the domains of glass, wax and plaster, through works that are often monumental. The artist lives and works in Paris.
About the Artwork
Inspired by the Mark of the Garden, Montcalm Mayfair commissioned French-Italian artist Valérie Novello to create a unique, textured flora/fauna artwork over the grand fireplace. The artist wrote a short poem to describe her inspiration behind the work:
Birds in the tender green of spring flutter amid the blossoming of rose buds. They are at the heart of the vibrant birth of nature.
Valérie Novello
The intertwining of this fauna and flora tells of the vitality and fullness of the arrival of spring.
The Japanese paper used, so thin but so resistant, takes the imprint of a previously sculpted bas-relief, like the memory of a shape.
This drawing, made of pastel in tangy and cheerful colors, evokes the sweet melancholy of my wonder in the face of nature.
