What to See and Do in Finsbury Square During a Weekend Break

Finsbury Square is a square in central London, home to not only the Montcalm but plenty of great scenery and things to do while you visit the city. If you don’t want to stray far from Finsbury, check out our brief guide to a few top activities and destinations to enjoy during your stay.

Tibetan Peace Gardens

Just two minutes from Finsbury Square, the Tibetan Peace Gardens are an idyll of peace and quiet in the city. This Buddhist garden is located just outside the Imperial War Museum, and first opened in 1999. Though often overlooked, the gardens are a fitting tribute to nature and the quest for world peace. There are sculptures through the Tibetan Peace Gardens, as well as inscriptions in various languages, each offering a poignant message to other cultures. During your stay at the Montcalm Royal London House, a trip here is a fantastic way to seek some tranquillity in the big city.

The Nursery Theatre

A major site for improv enthusiasts in London, the Nursery Theatre offers everything from live shows to classes and venue hire, and it’s all just a minute away from Finsbury Square. This particular venue was only launched in 2017, and thrives on entertaining an eclectic crowd as well as encouraging plenty of audience participation. If you attend a show here, you’ll soon find out more about the many different forms of improv which are thriving in the city, including everything from comedy to theatre.

Barbican Centre

Take a short five-minute walk from Finsbury Square and you’ll reach the Barbican Centre, one of the city’s major cultural centres. The Barbican is home to not only the London Symphony Orchestra, but also regularly attracts top talent from the worlds of popular music, art and film. There are two theatres and a range of exhibition spaces all with their own distinct personality and a packed roster of events throughout the year. Whether you want to see a talk, exhibit or live performance, while you stay at Montcalm Brewery you’ll be sure to find something to suit your tastes.

Local Shopping

From your base at the Montcalm Royal London House  you’ll be close to some of the best independent shops in the city. Within ten minutes, you’re close to the likes of Bookartbookshop, an art-based book shop ideal for unleashing your creative side. Alternatively, you can check out some unusual vintage furniture at Squint, where reclaimed pieces are given a new lease of life.

Finsbury Square Fountain

In the heart of Finsbury Square, you’ll find a commemorative drinking fountain made of stone. This structure was placed there by Thomas and Walter Smith, sons of confectionary pioneer and inventor, Tom Smith. Smith is best known for having created the Christmas cracker – but the purpose of this fountain is largely unknown to passers-by. If you want to have a great story to pass along, be sure to take a photo while you’re there.
