In homage to the hotel’s five characters, art consultants Culture A launched a Call to Artists (current students and alumni) at various London fine art institutes for artists to produce portraits of the various hotel characters: Constance Spry, the Marquis of Montcalm, Elizabeth Montagu, George Bridgetower, and Dame Nellie Melba. Six artists were selected and each artist was asked to draw multiple portraits of each character in their unique styles and in an array of mediums. The portraits are hung throughout the 6th floor lounge. Our goal was to give young artists the opportunity to create unique reinterpretations of the characters for permanent artwork in a landmark hotel. Some of the artists took inspiration directly from an existing portrait of the character while also imagining new portraits to give a real sense of life and variation to each subject. We wanted to do a community-style project involving artists from some of the UK’s most prestigious fine art schools, including the Central Saint Martins, The Royal Drawing School and The University of Brighton’s Fine Art Department.
