Each Montagu suite features a collection of artwork inspired by the character of Elizabeth Montagu and in the topics discussed in her famous Bluestockings salon: domestic life, botany, the arts, literature, and London society.
Above the bed, guests sleep under a dreamy still-life painting by American artist Jake Messing, which references Montagu’s character with imagery related to her life and interests. Montagu was a prolific letter writer, so this piece includes a quill pen and envelope as well as diamonds, roses, and gemstones to illustrate her affluence as one of the wealthiest women in England at the time.
Beside the bed hangs a signature sleep poem, illustrated by Swedish artist Petra Börner. These poems were commissioned through a Call to Writers launched in partnership with Goldsmiths, University of London’s MA course for Creative Writing. They are written by poets Josh Geffin and Ese Erheriene.
Additional artwork includes pieces collected from brocantes in France, Belgium, and the UK, as well as a large statement artwork by Austrian artist Rini Spiel whose contemporary style is inspired by the Art Nouveau paintings of Gustav Klimt.
